When the island came into the possession of the Ottoman Turks, the icon was taken by the Knights to France and from there to Italy, then Malta and Russia, where it stayed until the 1917 revolution. Here you can enjoy a dramatic panoramic view of the West Coast of the Island. Among the rare and special moments is of course the swarming of the pretty butterflies. But even beyond that, this place is a wild and romantic oasis that is well worth a visit. With narrow rock paths, lakes adorned with water lilies, rustic bridges, flowing waters, waterfalls and resting places, the Valley of the Butterflies is a green paradise of the island world. Take time for a short hike or visit the small museum where you will learn more about the butterfly species. Check this link  www.rhodesoldtown.gr to know more about filerimos hill.

We want our customers to be well informed about the service/ product they are about to purchase. Filerimos Hill’s star attraction is the Gothic-style Filerimos Monastery, which was built by the ruling Knights of St. John in the 15th century. There is a road that sets off from the Monastery square that leads to the westernmost point of the hill. The road to Golgotha used by Catholics was dotted with holy icon stands and bronze reliefs. At the end of the road of Martyrdom stands an 18 meters tall cross raised by the Italians in 1930.

Visitors can walk along a “Golgotha”, a tree-sheltered pathway with a series of shrines with scenes of the Holy Passion. This footway leads to an enormous imposing cross, from the top of which one can cherish the outstanding view of villages and bright green valleys that are generously stretched around. This site is famous because of the lovely and quiet walkways. Excavations in 1876 also uncovered important historical monuments in the form of Mycenaean pottery, foundations of buildings from the Doric period, and the Hellenistic temple of Zeus and Athena Palas. The beautiful Church of Our Lady on Mount Filerimos has been repaired, including the relocation of several Capuchin monks, to whom the complex owes its beautiful corridors and walkways.

During August, thousands of butterflies of the genus Panaxia swarm into the valley in order to reproduce. The sweet smell of the resin attracts the butterflies and when you are walking around, you will see Liquidambar trees everywhere and hundreds of Butterflies on the trunk and leaves. This is just a bus transfer in an air-conditioned minibus, with a leather interior, and for a small group. The driver was very friendly, gave information about the departure times, etc. It is essential to ensure that you bring sturdy shoes for the Butterfly Valley, the paths are very uneven and resemble a hike up a mountain. In addition, the butterflies can only be seen in June, July, and August.
